A slower result after 35 does not automatically mean your metabolism is “broken.” Energy needs can change with body size, muscle, activity, dieting history, sleep, health, and age. The useful response is to identify which factor changed.

Five reasons energy needs can change

  • Less daily movement: small reductions in walking and standing add up.
  • Less lean mass: aging and inactivity can reduce muscle and strength.
  • A smaller body after weight loss: a lighter body generally uses less energy.
  • Adaptive thermogenesis: energy expenditure can decline somewhat beyond the change predicted from body size during weight loss.
  • Health, medication, and sleep: these may alter appetite, fatigue, or activity.

What “reverse your metabolism” gets wrong

No food, supplement, or detox permanently turns metabolism up. Resistance training can support muscle, while regular movement raises activity expenditure. Adequate protein and a moderate deficit can help preserve lean tissue during weight loss.

A practical plateau review

  • Review at least several weeks of trend data.
  • Check portions, weekends, drinks, and unplanned bites without judgment.
  • Assess walking and training consistency.
  • Protect sleep and recovery.
  • Discuss unexplained changes or symptoms with a clinician.
