The best exercise after 35 is not one hormone-perfect workout. It is an appropriate combination you can perform consistently, recover from, and progress safely.
Strength training
Resistance exercise improves strength and supports lean mass. Weights, machines, bands, and bodyweight movements can all work. Technique, gradual progression, and an appropriate starting level matter more than a specific tool.
Aerobic activity
Walking, cycling, swimming, and other aerobic activities support cardiovascular fitness and can help reduce body fat. Activity can be accumulated in shorter sessions across the week.
What about HIIT?
HIIT is not inherently harmful to women over 35 and research suggests it can improve fitness and body composition. It is also not required. Intervals should match your fitness, joint health, preferences, and recovery.
A balanced starting template
- Two or more strength sessions across the week
- Regular moderate aerobic activity
- Daily movement and fewer long sedentary periods
- Rest and gradual progression
