Insulin resistance often has no obvious symptoms. It means cells respond less effectively to insulin, prompting the pancreas to produce more to help manage blood glucose. It can increase the risk of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, but it cannot be diagnosed from a social-media checklist.
Possible clues are not a diagnosis
Risk may be higher with a family history of type 2 diabetes, a history of gestational diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome, physical inactivity, sleep problems, or excess abdominal weight. Darkened, thickened skin in body folds can occur in some people. Many people, however, notice nothing.
Validated tests matter
Clinicians commonly use A1C, fasting plasma glucose, or an oral glucose tolerance test to identify prediabetes or diabetes. Fasting insulin and HOMA-IR are widely used in research but do not have one universal clinical cutoff for self-diagnosis. A triglyceride-to-HDL ratio is also not a stand-alone diagnosis.

What helps reduce risk?
Regular activity, resistance training, adequate sleep, and a sustainable eating pattern can support metabolic health. For people with prediabetes, structured lifestyle programs have strong evidence. Medication may be appropriate for some people and requires individualized care.
